Silent Running
Randall's new Isolation cabinets let you pump up the volume without disturbing the peace.
by Dominic Hilton

RANDALL ISOLATION 12-C
Nothing beats the sound of a roaring speaker flexing its voice coil. But the volume produced by a hard-driven cabinet can spell eviction for home recordists, and swamp other instruments within live settings. One solution is an isolation cabinet, or speaker "coffin," a sound-proofed enclosure that contains a speaker and mic hookup. Simply connect your amp to the speaker, insert the mic of your choice into the enclosure's clip, and you're ready to crank up the music without driving out your neighbors or your bandmates. Now Randall Amplification has redesigned isola for use in the studio and onstage. Designed for guitarists, the Isolation 12-C features a 12-inch speaker mounted on a horizontal baffle, surrounded by thick sound-insulating foam that extends beneath the hinged lid. Unlike Randall's Isolation 12 model, which features one of Randall's own Jaguar Vintage 60 speakers, the 12-C comes loaded with a revered Celestion Vintage 30, a hot choice for rock and lead tones. Your microphone of choice is held inside the cabinet by a pre-wired gooseneck mic arm, which offers plenty of flexibility for finding the sweet spots. External connections are made on the rear of the enclosure, with a pair of in/out, quarter-inch speaker jacks and an XLR jack for the microphone. All this hardware adds up to a rather hefty 75 pounds, but fear not—Randall has attached a pair of chunky casters and a sturdy retractable handle to the 12-C to make light work of moving this heavy rig. We quickly had a sweet, pumping tone coming through the monitors. The 12-C allows big-volume fun, with no extraneous background sounds and whisper-quiet external noise. We also found that, in addition to tight close-miked tones, more ambient sounds could be achieved by moving the microphone further from the speaker.

RANDALL ISOLATION 10
The Isolation 10 enclosure is virtually identical to the 12-C in terms of its construction, but this version is designed for use with bass guitars. Inside the tough, soundproof cabinet is a l0-inch Eminence Pro Series speaker, chosen for its clean, focused bass response. Considering that low frequencies travel farther than high frequencies and thereby cause the most noise pollution, the Isolation 10 is a godsend for home recording enthusiasts who want their bass tracks to pump realistically. Hooked up to the speaker output of a powerful bass combo, the Isolation 10 did just that. By using a number of close and ambient mic placements, we easily created crisp percussive tones and looser, spatial sounds, all with the authoritative thump of a solid Eminence working its booty.
